I was up against billion dollar companies with endless ad budgets… and there really was no internet! I had to think of the cheapest way I could spread awareness about my product. One of the ways was to wear a t-shirt. That’s right … a t-shirt! I went to the t-shirt shop bought a black shirt and had S-P-A-N-X ironed on. I wore it almost every day for 7 years. When you cant afford a billboard, you become your own billboard. I wore it with white pants (and Spanx shapewear underneath of course). This was my uniform. Even if it only prompted someone to ask, "what's Spanx?" It was a way for me to talk about the brand. Spanx didn’t advertise for the first 16 years in business.
